Jake became a tenant at Chambers in 2017 and is an already experienced advocate, regularly appearing in the High Court and County Court. He advises clients on paper, in conference and in drafting statements of case. He is a busy common-law practitioner, with particular expertise in commercial, public and regulatory law. Jake accepts direct access instructions, when appropriate, from clients in commercial and matrimonial finance disputes. Commercial & Public Law Commercial & Public Law Commercial law Jake has extensive experience offering written advice on commercial disputes for organisations across different sectors including financial, property, charity and healthcare sectors. He has a thriving chancery practice and was recently instructed in a lengthy probate trial – a result of a decade-long dispute. Jake also offers advice on civil procedure and costs. He has also advised clients on professional negligence claims, with particular expertise in alleged accountancy errors. Jake is building an international commercial practice. He is currently instructed by businesses following the Bento Rodrigues dam disaster in 2015. Public law Jake accepts instructions in cases involving government departments, local government and the police. He regularly drafts statements of case for the Home Secretary in Judicial Reviews and was instructed by the Department for Communities and Local Government to work on the Grenfell Inquiry. He was recently instructed on behalf of a Local Authority in the Administrative Court regarding the construction of an EU Directive for the purpose of a licensing scheme. He also accepts instructions on behalf of private companies and individuals when navigating public law matters. For example, he represented a business facing an injunction by a Local Authority under S222 Local Government Act in the High Court. For example, he successfully represented an appellant challenging a decision by the CQC with regards to Building the Right Support guidance. He is currently instructed by Lifeways Healthcare in an appeal against a CQC registration decision. Jake has also undertaken disciplinary proceedings on behalf of the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Family Family & Court of Protection Jake has wide-ranging experience in family law matters. He represents Local Authorities, parents and Guardians in public family proceedings, as well as parties in private family law and financial disputes. Jake has a particular interest in international family law and has appeared in cases with jurisdictional issues involving cross-border abductions, human trafficking and forced marriage protection orders. Jake also has an expertise in legal issues surrounding surrogacy and fertility. He was awarded a prize by the Bar Council for an essay advocating reform of the law on parental orders and surrogacy arrangements and has written widely on the subject. Jake has represented Local Authorities in the Court of Protection regarding Deprivation of Liberty Orders and is part of the Chambers’ Court of Protection team. General Civil Personal Injury & Clinical Negligence Jake acts for claimants and defendants in personal injury and clinical negligence matters. He also has a busy paper-based practice, offering advice on liability and quantum in cases on the fast and multi-track. He has recently advised on a 6-figure settlement for a Claimant after a serious injury with complex medical evidence. Jake recently lectured on the issue of consent in clinical negligence cases post-Montgomery at the Association of Surgeons in Training. Inquests Jake also accepts instructions to act as a representative at inquests. He has represented the family of a Mother who died from an overdose of prescription drugs in an inquest reported by the national media. Crime Crime Jake undertook lots of criminal cases during the second six of pupillage and in the early stages of tenancy, giving him an extensive advocacy experience. During pupillage, Jake spent two months in the office of the Treasury Counsel under the supervision of Tom Little QC working on high-profile terrorism, murder and sexual offences cases, including the trial of Tommy Mair for the murder of Jo Cox MP.
